The ``pertussis'' component in the controversial DTP vaccine comes from the bug
that causes the disease, Bordetella pertussis. This bacteria mainly affects
infants and small children. It is very infectious. It basically wipes out the
cilia, or little microscopic hairs that line the respiratory tract, making it
extremly difficult to expel mucus, which builds up, helping more pertussis
bacteria stick to the cells lining the tract. The disease colonizes rapidly and
can last for several weeks.
Victims of the disease, desperate for more breath -- and with
a much smaller space to take in air with which to cough up phlegm -- develop a
distressing ``whoop'' while breathing in. The disease, first defined in Paris in
the late 16th century, reached a peak in the United States in the 1930s, with
about 200,000 cases a year, and as many as 12,000 deaths. Since widespread use
of vaccines beginning after World War II, the cases have fallen to between 5,000
and 7,000 a year, and between five and 10 fatalities annually.
